Oskar Thorvaldsson, Founder
Increased regulatory rigger and cut-throat competition has pressurized some of the better brands within the supplement industry to deliver higher-quality nutraceuticals.
Make no mistakes about it, the supplement industry has improved tremendously since the advent of The Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 (“DSHEA”).
Further, consumers have increasingly demanded greater transparency and purer ingredients in supplements, including minimum excipients. It is not a fad; this demand is here to stay alongside the demand for organic foods.
Purity is Essential
It’s not an easy task for a factory to follow the current GMP rules to the letter while at the same time eliminating all ingredients the consumer may regard as questionable chemicals. Basically if the consumer understands the words the consumer takes a positive action, if the consumer doesn’t fully understand the words they will “think about it” and never buy.
People want supplements with words that they can understand and pronounce. They do not want preservatives and chemicals and they look for those on the label by reading the label backwards.
Still, most supplements manufactured today have in them a heavy dose of what consumers consider questionable ingredients or words they don’t understand. This is so because it takes much more time to manufacture supplements without such manufacturing aids. Even if a manufacturer wanted to go “clean” they would have to sell their existing equipment. Large encapsulation machines often simply don’t run without a heavy dose of excipients. Further since patience has to be built into the culture of such manufacturers, a change to “clean labels” takes time and is not easy.
This is precisely where PureNSM, a California-based nutraceutical and OTC contract manufacturer, comes into the picture.
According to Todd Runestad with New Hope Network “Pure NSM is a great example of a contract manufacturer that is really meeting the moment of this clean label movement”.
PureNSM is at the forefront of manufacturing clean and tested dietary supplements. They specialize in manufacturing excipient-free capsules and tablets without magnesium stearate and preservative-free liquids supplements.
“Since our inception in 1993, our aim has always been to manufacture and deliver products that are pure, safe, and potent, without toxic flow agents, fillers, artificial colors, or binders,” says Oskar Thorvaldsson, founder of PureNSM.
The Lab is the Backbone of PureNSM
Since PureNSM wants to offer label owners the flexibility of low minimums at a competitive price and without compromising on quality and purity, it became necessary to bring all testing inhouse in order to avoid expensive testing fees and processing delays from 3rd party labs.
“When a company tests as much as we do the testing bill will need to be kept at a minimum” Thorvaldsson explains.
According to Karem Villegas, Laboratory Director with PureNSM, DNA testing for supplement identity is a total failure because it’s impossible to test DNA that has become damaged in the extraction process. Yes, DNA testing sounds good, but it’s only useful for testing unprocessed raw materials, prior to milling and extracting. PureNSM uses FDA recommended identity testing called HPTLC for herbal supplements.
Years ago, shortly after installing the CaMag HPTLC testing system, PureNSM rejected about 30% of their incoming botanicals. “Just like now we sourced all of our raw materials from the best US raw material supply houses and despite that had this dismal rejection rate of 30%. We now have about 5% rejection rate. Our suppliers know not to send us nothing but their top shelf raw materials” said Oskar Thorvaldsson.
Lawn Mover Clippings?
“I pity the label owner that has their supplements made in a factory that is known by raw material suppliers for not testing for identity – who knows what’s in the finished goods? Lawn mower clippings?
PureNSM is expanding and is currently improving output by fivefold. “We are eager to keep lead times low in order to save our clients’ money and improve their cashflow positions” said Dylan Barr, Sales Manager, for PureNSM. Two piece encapsulations is PureNSM main business, followed by tablet pressing and liquid nutraceuticals. We asked Thorvaldsson how they can avoid preservatives in their liquid products. Oskar explained that “we avoid the use of preservatives by lowering the water activity in their formulas, without any water, there is minimal growth.
New Product Offerings
PureNSM newest product offering is oil filled capsules, not to be confused by softgels that includes a lot of plasticizers. The oil in capsules use the normal Tapioca, Gel, or HPMC capsules you have become accustomed to. PureNSM also recently bought a high pressure homogenizer from Microfluidics (M815) for a high quality output of nano CBD, CBN and CBG and select nutraceuticals and fish oils.
The Value of 3rd Party GMP Certifications
PureNSM is audited by two of the world largest quality control organizations, UL and NSF-International. You can see the corresponding icons on their website, however the products they manufacture are not licensed to display those quality control icons on the product labels. This has presented tremendous distrust in the marketplace and when label owners simply promise “GMP quality” on their labels and websites they aren’t really helping to uplift the industry from mediocrity because such GMP icon means absolutely noting! No matter how you design that icon, it is still worthless because there is nothing to back it up!
This is why, under the leadership of Oskar, PureNSM is now licensing verification services from VeriGMP (TM) so that the clients of PureNSM will be able to carry the following icon on their website and products:
This icon guaranties that the product is made in a GMP certified facility that is certified by either UL or NSF or both!
The VeriGMP promise is backed by cash awards and professional liability insurances.
